Mould infestation is a big problem that homeowners experience. Mould Infestation compromises Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Infestations when left unchecked can cause significant health issues and promote allergies and trigger asthma, headaches, rashes.

Many people fail to understand how mould infestation in the home can pose a significant Health Risk.  A recent World Health Office Report indicated that Mould in the Home is some 1,000 times more dangerous to humans than outdoors.

Dealing with Mould it is prudent to hire a professional mould cleaning service to decontaminate the home. If you want to do the job yourself, below are mentioned several methods to effectively clean mould from your house.

Baking Soda

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a common ingredient found in kitchens. It has a high pH that stops the growth of mould. It is a non-toxic and inexpensive mould cleaning product. Mix ¼ tablespoon of baking soda with water in a spray bottle. Scrub away the mould from the surface first. Then spray the solution. Leave it for two hours. Use a brush to remove the residue. Wipe the surface with a clean damp cloth and let it dry. Baking soda is a mild disinfectant. It is good to clean mould as it does not have any strong smell or leaves residual marks.

Essential Oils

Essential oils not only smell great but are effective too to clean moulds. Tea tree oil, clove oil, cinnamon oil, thyme oil is good to use for this purpose. Take a teaspoon of any oil of your choice and mix it with a cup of water. Scrub away the existing mould and spray the solution on the surface. Leave it for an hour. You can also leave it overnight. Scrub the surface again to ensure all mould is removed. Spray once again and wipe with a clean cloth. You can also use this solution after treating the surface with the baking soda method. The results will be amazing.

Vinegar

Vinegar is another household ingredient that effectively cleans, disinfects and removes odour around your home. White distilled vinegar is mildly acidic which breaks mould structure to kill it. Spray undiluted white vinegar on the surface. Leave it for an hour. Wipe off with a clean moist cloth and let the surface dry. This is a good mould cleaning remedy for small mould infestations especially black mould in bathrooms and the kitchen. If there are remains of mould stains, you can use borax to remove them.

Hydrogen Peroxide

This is a great antibacterial and antifungal chemical solution. Use a three to ten per cent solution of undiluted hydrogen peroxide on the infected surface. Spray and leave the solution for fifteen minutes. Scrub the surface properly to remove all residue. Use a wet sponge to wipe clean. You can use hydrogen peroxide with the above-mentioned natural cleaning products for a better cleaning effect. Hydrogen peroxide also lightens stains as it has moderate bleaching properties. The solution is good to clean walls and other surfaces in bathrooms and the kitchen. It does not leave any residues or emit harmful fumes.

Chlorine Bleach

Sodium hypochlorite or regular chlorine bleach kills all kinds of moulds. It also removes all discolouration effectively. Chlorine bleach must be diluted before use as it is a very harsh chemical. It emits very strong fumes during usage. You must always wear a cleaning mask to avoid inhalation of the fumes along with gloves, safety glasses and protective clothing. It is better to use chlorine bleach outside the home for severe mould infestation of concrete, house siding, stone, brick. A cup of bleach should be used with a gallon of water. Pour water on the infested surfaces and then use the solution. Give time for it to work. Scrub and rinse with water. Repeated the mould cleaning process if needed. Let the surface air dry. The chemical is harmful to plants so cover them. Rinse the area with plenty of water to wash down all residue.
